Tired as I am of reading text on the screen, I have been looking for a good solution. The problem is that the text in large batches starts to flicker eventually, bouclair your eyes are irritated by the glare from the screen and the length of the lines range from everything small with three words per line to range throughout bouclair the 1680 pixel wide screen. Such being fussy to read on at length, but there is a solution - Tofu!
Welcome to Tofu. Unlike vegetarian food it is named after, the program is quite so appetizing. You can now read the text namely divided into columns of just the right size. Just the right because you choose width, size, colors, margins, etc. yourself.
So over to the little krøkkete section. The text has to come into tofu in any way. Cut and paste works fine, if not smooth. Do you have Snow Leopard, you can relatively easily create a new service. Then simply select the text, right-clicking and selecting "View in Tofu".
The downside of all this is that tofu is not the most stable program. Crashes occur no more frequently than, say once in twenty, but it is still more often than most programs. And the view clearly works best if it's as plain text as possible opening of Tofu. PDFs are sometimes okay, but it is often more messy than it is for the good.

Otherwise you also WriteRoom that I use very much, it has a black background bouclair and yellow / green text and removes all background so it does not interfere. http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/products/writeroom disadvantage of WriteRoom compared bouclair to Tofu is Tofu that is free, it is not WriteRoom.
