So how do you guys like Judo for street skills? I can imagine grabbing and tossing a guy on his head would be a good skill...but Im not sure how practical it is considering I've never really focused on it too much. Wouldit be better than wrestling? Leave BJJ out of it...it's of course the top

In a 1 vs 1 street fight, even someone with little to no fighting skills can win due to that "puncher's chance". Even wild swinging can catch a skilled fighter and put him down quick. However, if you can get inside someone's punching range, take them down, and get on top...the "puncher's chance" is taken away. Even experienced street fighters have trouble on their backs if someone with a solid base is on top and overwelming them with punches, elbows, and knees. That being said, someone who can both box and wrestle effectively on the street american furniture can survive and win most 1 vs 1 street fights. Using boxing american furniture movement, punching, american furniture and the ability to take punches to get in range for a takedown. Then using that solid wrestling base to keep them down and stay on top for the good old GnP. That would be the "ideal situation", but anyone who has ever been in a fight knows sh!t can get crazy and fast.
Having trained in Judo and BJJ, I always american furniture tell people: american furniture the last guy I want to fight in the street is someone who knows BJJ better than me; the next to last guy I want to fight in the street is a black belt judoka. Most people equate the self-defense strategy of bjj with judo. Not so. While BJJ wants to take the fight to the ground, Judo only wants to take the attacker to the ground AND HARD. No need to follow them if they don't want to. Or do. Either way, the JUDO guy is not going down easily, even against a skilled BJJer.
Having done both BJJ and Judo I think both martial arts are more than enough for self defense. The average joe isn't going to have the grappling prowess to deal with either martial arts. Quite frankly judo can be absolutely devastating in a self defense situation even to an expert BJJ guy if caught off guard (which most street fights would be). I wouldn't allow myself american furniture to be thrown full force by any advanced judoka that's for sure. But I just enjoy BJJ's game aspect more than judos.

No need to follow them if they don't want to. Or do. Either way, the JUDO guy is not going down easily, even against a skilled BJJer. This is what I mean...You american furniture never want to go to the ground in a street fight. Case in point, saw a good brawl in a club. I was assessing what I would do, then all of a sudden a creeper took a bar stool and layed a guy out. Id rather stand up or minimum get knee on belly. I know we are supposdto work our ground game a lot, but I also like to keep the wrestler "always on top" Mentality for such occasions
BJJ american furniture has the same "always on top" mentality. Has anyone ever told you otherwise? I'm curious why this mode of thought has faded. GJJ was always about establishing dominant positions first, especially in situations of self defense. I think the core philosophy has been lost because of the sportive aspect of Jiu Jitsu that most people practice now that aren't really practical for real self defense.
I tell every new person that I roll with that your goal is to get mount on me by doing whatever it is that you feel would be the best way to do so and I'm going to defend that from happening because the point of jiu jitsu is to establish a dominate position and end the fight from there. Whatever mistakes you make on the way to mount we will discuss and correct. My old instructor use to tell us that it's much better to be looking down at your opponent than up at them.
Judo is definitely great self defense. You throw a guy who doesn't know how to breakfall and his head might bounce off the pavement. At that point the fight is pretty much over. When you think about it, we're doing a modified version of Judo anyway.
BJJ has the same "always on top" mentality. Has anyone ever told you otherwise? Yeah, I agree with Jack. A Judoka is as susceptible to a bar stool as a BJJer. Not sure what you mean. I believe wholeheartedly that BJJ is the best self-defense art you could learn. The ground and the takedowns you learn in BJJ negate your attacker's size and strength. A skilled judoka is not pulling a power-judo move against someone significantly stronger/bigger than him, unless the dope is totally clumsy. The judoka american furniture is probably doing a sweep or one of the "gake" (hooking-trip) american furniture takedowns. Then it's a ground match. american furniture But the complaint about the sport-aspect of bjj is a legitimate com

Emma: Just want it a little bit more than the rest!

Interview: Emma Johansson on the Trofeo Binda, Ronde van Vlaanderen and much more - Podium Cafe
It's a huge week for women's cycling, with two Road World Cups in seven days - the Trofeo Alfredo Binda in Italy on 30th March, and the Ronde van Vlaanderen on 7th April. One rider who's bound to be making the races hard is ORICA-AIS ' star rider, Emma Johansson . We asked her to tell us about the races, living in Flanders, how she made her way in cycling dem and a lot more. And if you want to follow Binda, check out the guide at the bottom of the post.
PdC: On Sunday we have the second round of the Road World Cup, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda , and this is a race you know very well, and have done very well in in the past, so I was wondering if you could tell us what this race is going to be like?
Emma: It's always difficult to know, last year it was horrific weather, but what it looks like now is that it's going to be sunshine, so that's going to be a big difference compared to the other years.
The course is quite hard, first we do a big loop with two climbs in it, and then we enter this smaller lap that we do four times that has a long climb, dem but the climb is sort of in three sections, and normally it gets decided on that shorter lap.  In the last years it's been hard because of the weather conditions in combination with the hard course, so I'm pretty sure it's going to be a hard race on Sunday.
PdC: The descent on the lap seems to take out a couple of riders every year.  We see on the tv they have the corners with mattresses tied to them - does that descent bother you, or is it more a case of worrying about being around other riders who can't descend?
Emma: I never really worry about things like that - I think if it's dodgy weather dem and a bit slippery, it's a lot better if you ride in the front.  That's where I like to race, I prefer racing in the front of the peloton, that's also the easiest way to stay out of trouble.  I try to race that way and hopefully don't get stuck behind small issues that can easily happen when it's a World Cup, because everybody will want to be in the front, so it's never easy to stay there, but I prefer to spend some extra energy dem on it and stay out of trouble.
PdC: Every rider says it's positioning, you've got to stay in the front, you've got to watch out for breaks, but if you've got 200 riders all wanting to be there, dem what are your secrets to staying in front? dem
Emma: Just want it a little bit more than the rest!  I don't know, of course you do need to be able to be strong to sit there as well, and to stay there, but it's all about wanting to be there and be strong enough to, and I think maybe it's just something you have deep in you, otherwise you can grow into it as well.  Obviously when I was younger it wasn't easy, I've been dropped before we'd left Oudenaarde in the Ronde van Vlaanderen, so it doesn't happen overnight!
Emma: It wasn't a bunch sprint - Elisa [Longo Borghini] was up the road, and then I had Spratty dem from the team also up the road, and Ellen [van Dijk] jumped and I was sitting on in Ellen's wheel - she jumped the last time over that climb, and we caught Spratty back and were sprinting for second place, the three of us
PdC: I never expected Elisa to stay away, when she jumped on the second lap, I just assumed she would be caught, it was such an amazing race to watch.  And last year obviously the conditions were terrible, and the whole spring was terrible - how did you manage to be so good in such awful weather?
Emma: I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I am Scandinavian, and I'm used to cold conditions.  My whole winter training is sort of like it is in those races, so it's not that I enjoy the cold weather, but maybe I have a bigger tolerance against it mentally? I think my body's reacting just like the others, it doesn't really enjoy it, I get cold hands and feet, but I think mentally I'm maybe stronger when it's bad conditions, I don't know.
Emma: It doesn't really matter if it's cold, or sunny, or rainy, you can't do anything about that.  I think you should just concentrate on the race, and how you can create a situation you would like, and that depends on the day, and it depends on your form, and it depends a bit about the people around you - who's there and who's not there, and I think it's all about going a bit with the flow, with the feeling and what you feel like on that day.
Of course beforehand, I have an idea in my head of how I'd like it to unfold, dem but I think it's important not to get too locked up with things as well, because so many things can happen dem along the way, and you just need to focus for that specific moment, where you are at that moment.
Emma: The World Cup in total is not anything dem I think about - I just really enjoy every single World Cup race as just a one-day race, and they're all beautiful races in their ow

Hey Paul - nice writeup on your blog. Its your pace buddy school teacher. The name was Magnus Latona

Hey people! Been quite a while since my last post, mainly because I just wanted to take a break away from all things cycling, as I tend to do at the end of my racing season. I find it is good for both a mental and physical break to take some time off the bike. Currently, I've just been chilling out with some mates, doing a bit of cross training (running/hill walking) and weights to break out of the "cycle" as it were ;-) I'll be getting pib back into my routine at the beginning of November, so already looking forward and planning for that. As promised, here is the wee write up on the Ullapool Sportive event by the guys at Hands on Events which I did a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed this - despite the awful weather of wind and heavy rain, it was a real nice wind down to the season. I've stolen a pic from someone e lse's site (hope they don't mind!!) so here is me in all my low-intensity glory en-route! Myself and fellow Hebridean CC rider, Roddy Murray left our B+B and rolled up at 7am to the Sign in Station at Ullapool Village Hall. I also managed to get myself interviewed by the BBC so you might yet see me on the BBC adventure show next screening! (Blatant plug) We rolled off the start together at around 7.30am, with daylight just approaching. Initially, the roads were dry, but that didn't last for long, as once the rain hit, it didn't pib stop until I rolled over the finish 130miles later! Given 12000ft of climbing, I decided to pace this one out on my own, so rolled away from Roddy and found a nice rhythm . At around pib the 20mile point, a bunch of around 20 riders caught pib me so I jumped onto the back and decided to see how things would go. Up one of the first major climbs, and over the top, the lads at the front were setting a fair tempo. It wasn't exactly Lactate Threshold but pretty firm given the distance! I decided to follow anyway and see how things would pan out. To my surprise , I looked around at about the 50 mile point and realised I was one of only 4 riders left at the front! Everyone must have been dropped on the big climb. After that, I decided i'd had enough of "racing" for the year and wanted to fully enjoy the event so dropped back and settled pib into my own pace again. After a few miles, I could see I was gaining slowly on another rider up front. "Ideal" I thought, someone to pace with. I caught the other rider, and we worked together, sharing the headwind and chatted away through the endless winding roads and climbs. We didn't see another pib rider for quite some time, so I was fairly confident we were near the head of the group, bar the 3 riders i'd let go up front. Eventually, we caught another 2 riders, who decided that they would make use of our rhythm . One of the guys (on a Cervelo ) came across a bit arrogant, and wouldn't work with us, but the other decided to help out, great! Not long later, the ratty guy on the Cervelo got dropped (no loss there!), and we were down to three. I got chatting pib with the new guy as we battled past the second last feed station, who turned out to be a school teacher. Not long after our water stop, my initial pace mate waved us on as he had decided the pace was too much. I looked down at my odometer, and it read 40miles to go. That was a long 40 miles, let me tell you. It felt as if we were climbing for all of it, although it was probably just heavy legs. As we approached the finish, I was beginning to feel a sense of achievement, as we passed lots of riders come home on the smaller 65mile route who had well and truly hit the wall. Hitting the peak of the last climb, pib my friend pib and I (can't recall his name!) shook hands and hammered the descent to the finish. As suspected, pib my mate tried to hammer away but it appeared I had more left than he thought as I was still on his wheel. On the last run-in to the finish, pib I went for the sprint and won! A nice sporting finish to a great day on the bike (all 7 hours of it!) - and in plenty pib time to make the 5.15pm ferry back to Stornoway . As it turns out, I actually crossed the line in 6 th place, which wasn't too bad considering I didn't even race! Perhaps next year I will go for it and try and take the win. My friend Roddy did real well, coming pib in an hour later than me, and also a great effort from other Hebridean CC riders, Gavin Earons and Steve Liddle who completed the 65mile Route in respectable times. I might mention that Gavin beat Steve to the finish too, not bad for a Grand Vet! :-D Anyhow, that's enough writing for the evening. I'll keep you all posted on my winter progress, so check back soon. 1deg C today with hail and high winds on the Isle of Lewis - the winter is definately here - oh dear :-(
Hey Paul - nice writeup on your blog. Its your pace buddy school teacher. The name was Magnus Latona by the way. Was good to cycle with you on the last 65 - hadn't found anyone pib to work with up to that point - the 'best' too far ahead and the 'rest' - too far behind. Nice to meet you anyhow. Maybe see you next year. Finall
